Purpose

URI will work towards building a platform that brings a cohesive and more relevant comprehension of user research in India and calibrate accordingly with the global context in future. Our purpose is focused on three areas:

To build awareness and learning across teams in businesses and organisations about the larger scope, value and impact of UR.

To build foresight of where research can adapt and evolve with emerging technologies and businesses in future.

(We felt the need first to comprehend the current scope, operation and diversity of the UR ecosystem in the country before we work towards a shared future in the UR discipline.)

To help decision makers across companies build clarity & sustain investment in UR functions that can be fully-integrated and leveraged for business ROI. 

User Research India is currently registered as a For-Profit entity for ease of managing funds and will operate as a non-profit in spirit and action. The organisation is a volunteer-driven initiative that will be agnostic to institutions, companies and individuals to maintain ethical and equitable practice. 

Team

The URI core team consists consists of passionate volunteers committed towards supporting the research ecosystem in India to thrive. The core team will continue to evolve as the platform grows across different initiatives. We are actively building our community of contributors from UR, product, design & business teams across companies and organisations in the sub-continent. Achyutha Sharma

Founder

Achyutha has over 17 years of experience in research, strategy and design. He has led large teams in UR/ UXR and closely collaborated with leadership to drive business impact. He has built depth in research and strategy through his work in the social sector especially among the billion users demographic across sectors such as livelihoods, education, water & sanitation, B2C product and health. Meanwhile, his commercial sector experience has given him invaluable insights on Indian consumers and B2B markets. Achyutha was a nominee for the British Council's Young Creative Entrepreneur Award, an Acumen India fellow 2014 and ex-steering committee member & fellow of the Australia-India Youth Dialogue.

Priyal Shrivastava

Core Team

Priyal is a designer turned UX researcher at Razorpay and holds a Bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. With a keen interest in UX research, Priyal has gained hands-on experience across various domains, including education, e-commerce, and fintech. Currently, Priyal is focused on building UX research practices at Razorpay. When not working, Priyal enjoys exploring musical genres, diving into the rabbit hole of Wikipedia and finding new creative channels to leverage for research.

Arjun Asokan

Design Lead

Arjun Asokan is a versatile designer with expertise in graphic design, branding, and UX design. He is currently a Senior Product Designer at Practo, a healthcare company. He studied at the College of Fine Arts - Thrissur and began his career as an art director at an advertising agency, gaining experience in visual narratives for ad campaigns. He then joined renowned design studios like Brand Union and Bhavishyavani Future Sounds, working on diverse projects such as corporate identity, concert posters, website designs, and AR games. He enjoys browsing the web for inspiration from art, films, music, and more in his free time.

Radha Agarwal

Core Team

Radha is an experienced UX Researcher with a strong background in clinical psychology. She has previously led the UX research team at Ernst & Young in India, while representing the Indian research team on international platforms. Currently, Radha is the Head of Research at Talabat, a prominent Middle Eastern food delivery platform. Her passion for diving into diverse and intriguing problems in product development is evident in her work. Outside of work, Radha enjoys reading, watching movie recaps, and learning new facts, which aligns with her professional interests.

DINA DASTUR MEHTA

Dina divides her time between London and Mumbai. With a background in sociology and anthropology, Dina has more than twenty-five years specialising in qualitative research and ethnography. Her company Convo is an ethnographic and UX research firm operating in India and Bangladesh. The practice is built on a deep understanding of human behaviour and nuancing of cultural context and in facilitating meaningful conversations for organisations. Working with multi-disciplinary and often leadership teams, Dina’s work has benefitted global organisations such as Meta, Google, Intel, Airbnb, Duolingo, Nokia, Bose, Wikipedia, Procter and Gamble and others. Dina has also guided many online networking communities and non-profit organisations, and calls herself an accidental information activist. Her perspectives, blogging and participation in social media have earned her acclaim, and she is a TED Fellows. She has presented many papers at Indian and global conferences, and Convo has been a long-standing supporter and sponsor of EPIC Conference.

DEEPAK MENON

Deepak Menon is Vice President at Microsoft India, leading the Product Experience, Design and Research teams across products in the Experience & Devices (E+D) at Microsoft India. They include products like Windows, Teams, Office, Edge, Search, Bing, OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, and Loop. Deepak’s team helped define the enquiry around ‘What is productivity for billions of mobile-only users’ which has led to product innovations like Microsoft Office and M365 on the phone – products that help businesses connect with their value chain to collaborate and complete consumer and business workflows. He was also the driver for the Microsoft Centre for Information work which reimagined the future of productivity and won the IDSA gold reward in 2003. Deepak has worked at Google leading User Experience teams in India and Seattle. He was also the Chief Product and Customer officer at Myntra where he led teams across multiple functions. Deepak completed his B.Arch. from REC (NIT) Trichy, his M.Arch. on a fellowship and M.F.A. from The Ohio State University.

APALA CHAVAN

Apala has been viewed as a global expert on cross-cultural research, design and contextual innovation. Apala started the Human Factors International (HFI) India operations in 1999 as Managing Director. She continued as MD, HFI India and then VP, HFI Asia, before assuming her previous role as Global Chief of Technical Staff. She is also the CEO of the Institute of Customer Research. She has worked with global giants such as HP Labs, Adidas, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, NCR, and Intel, among others. Apala was past Chair of the IAMAI Design Committee, a member of ACM Publications Board. Apala has co-edited the Taylor and Francis published book Innovative Solutions: What Designers Need to Know for Today’s Emerging Marketspace apart from contributing to numerous other publications. In addition to her usability certifications (CXA and CUA), Apala holds an MSc with distinction in User Interface Design from London Metropolitan University.
